Mini update

Last week was a rather short week for us as far as work on the house went. We took things easy and didn't start anything major, but made some progress nonetheless.

We put trim up in the hallway around the cedar ceiling to finish off the look and I caulked around it, cleaning up the edges. I also touched up the paint in some areas where we scratched it while getting the ceiling in place. Once we put up trim around the doors and floor and add a light it'll be complete!

The photo isn't great, the "before" was taken at night so the lighting was quite different, but you can see the gaps in the trim and the scratched wall. The "after" shows the true color much better, and you can really see the difference the trim/caulk/touch-up made. I'm convinced caulk makes everything look better!

We started the next step of the tile in the entry: we took note of the pattern for the tiles and took them up so we could put down the Schluter Dietra. Scott watches Renovision on YouTube and they suggested the Dietra for under the tile. It's basically plastic sheeting with raised squares that you sandwich between the subfloor and the tile. We cut the dietra to fit the entry way; the next step is to put thinset down, then dietra on top, then thinset, then tile. The idea is that then if the concrete subfloor cracks that crack won't transfer to the tiles (cracked tiles are no bueno). There are two types of concrete: concrete that HAS cracked and concrete that WILL crack. We don't want to put hard work into tiling the entry just to have it crack, do hopefully this extra step will help!

The Dietra is also waterproof, so we'll be using it in the bathrooms, so this is great practice.

Part of the reason this week was so short was due to a work trip for Scott. He was needed in West Palm so we loaded up the dog and I worked from the car/hotel while he worked in the office. This is the first time we've spent the night away from home since last March. I can't wait until it's safe to actually go on vacation again, but for one night it was nice. We walked around downtown and found two geocaches.

When we got home Friday Scott had to change out the bilge pump in the boat for his fishing trip Saturday. I'm super impressed with Scott's ability to diagnose and repair boat problems, he should add it to his growing list of skills!

Scott went fishing Saturday while I visited with my parents. A nice, relaxing day for both of us.

Sunday I took on a project of a different kind, sewing a roman shade. We have two skinny (17 inch) windows behind our couch and we've looked for blinds that will match the rest of the house, but haven't found any we love. I was recently gifted some curtains (thank you Frieda!!) to use as they were, or as fabric. They had three layers: top, liner, and blackout, so I cut out the liner to create a DIY cordless roman shade. I'll create a tutorial once I have them both done, but for now, here are some pictures.

Don't mind the dusty screen and power cord from my computer. #reallife haha!

I'm actually really pleased with the way the shade turned out, it has magnets to hold it up in three different positions and when the sun is shining it filters the light but provides privacy. The house next door is finally complete so I'd imagine we'll have neighbors soon, so these shades are complete at a perfect time!

Eventually I'll actually hang curtains on the outside of the windows to make them look fuller, but I'm holding off, the more fabric, decorations, etc in the house, the more things I'll need to dust/clean as we continue construction, so for now the walls remain bare.

Teeny, tiny update this week, but I'm feeling great about where we are!
